Your kid(s) has a general idea what is popular by watching TV commercials that are showing what kids are wearing in-between their favorite cartoon shows and what kids are wearing on the playground at school. Therefore, you as parent(s) must sit down with your child(ren) and ask what they like and what they are interested in to give you an idea where to start. Also, give you an idea how to budget on how much to spend on their clothing.

After 12, it is entirely different story, the child becoming a teenager or is a teenager; they have different view how clothes are supposed to fit. It is best allow your teenager choose their own clothes because they are at the age of fashion conscious and parents “do not know what fashion is” in eyes of growing teenager; along as, the child’s choice of clothing is not too inappropriate that you will end up getting a call from school officials stating “we are sending your child home due to a violation school of dress code policy” then you are okay to let them do so.
Children really don’t care about color coordination unlike us parents do, but on the other hand it does teaches them what matches in style and color and what doesn’t. For example, plaids and stripes together are not good combination.
